  • Notes
    • - According to the 1930 Saline County, Missouri Federal Census, Charles was an inmate in the "Missouri State School." He could not read or write.

      - Per his death certificate, Charles had been at the Missouri State School 23 years, 10 months, and 11 days. It seems he was buried at the state school cemetery 20 July 1934. Cause of death was excessive heat (heat stroke).

      - Email from Grandpa regarding Missouri State School, 22 December 2002:

Hi Stephanie (and Bill the mechanic),
We are fine, just cold. Winter is here it was 34 this morning, and barely reached 50 yesterday. Had ice on the bird bath last week. The good news, we know it won't last long.
I remember running across Charles W. Lincecum, listed as in the Poor Farm, a facility in Cape Girardeau located where that beautiful park is now, across from the Memorial Park Cemetery. I never saw anything indicating he was in the MO State School in Saline County. I do know that Boonville in Saline County is the location of the facility (Boys Town) for Male Juvenile law breakers. As far as him being "mentally challenged," he was listed as "feeble minded." (Your Great Grandpa Charley would have called him "crazy".) :o)
Now, let me get into my old folder and see what I can find:
Charles born Jun 1893,(?) son of Henry. 1910 census gives data on Chas as age 13,(?) at the Poor Farm, born in MO, admitted 8 Oct 1909, discharged 6 Sep 1910, no home. On 13 Aug 1910, M. E. Shelton was listed as his guardian, who sent Charles to a "Home"in Marshall, MO, reason: Feeble Mind. Seems like a conflict in his discharge date (6 Sep 1910 and his trip to Marshall on 13 Aug). Marshall (the town) is also in Saline County and not far from Boonville.
I guess the answer to the real question about Missouri State School in Saline County, MO, would be full of "assumptions" on my part. I'll let you do the "assuming". :-) Hope something I said helps...
Time to eat around here now. Hope the fuel line quit leaking before Bill got really upset.
We will head to Cottonwood tomorrow morning; plan to take PJs just in case we don't want to drive home tomorrow.
      Love you guys
      GPa and GMa

      - From Missouri Department of Mental Health [https://dmh.mo.gov/about/history.html - accessed 15 March 2018]:
"The Missouri State School was established by an act of the 40th General Assembly in 1899 and opened in 1901, with three buildings and sixty male patients. The city of Marshall gave 288 acres of land for the institution which, until 1925, was known as the Missouri State Colony for Feebleminded and Epileptic. The 69th General Assembly authorized the purchase of 82 additional acres. Through the more than half-century of its existence, the institution has expanded until it is now comprised of three units at Marshall, Carrollton and Higginsville."
